Sri Ramakrishna
Genesis :: Chakratirtha Math

The Ramakrishna Math, Puri is located at the sea shore at Chakratirtha where the first holy wooden log (Daru) was embarked for the deity of Lord Jagannath (Daru Brahma) and wherefrom the eye-catching radiance beauty of rising sun arising from the Bay of Bengal is visible while on the other the furious facet of the sea with its high pick waves thrashing the shore with roaring sound is also an unforgetable experience.

Sri Ramakrishna Bose, the only son of Sri Balaram Bose a noted devotee of Sri Ramakrishna, also happened to be a very large hearted person like his father. He donated this property to Ramakrishna Math, Belur, in the name of Ramakrishna Math, Puri in 1916. Later he donated their house at Calcutta to Belur Math which is now known as 'Balaram Mandir'. The Math at Chakratirtha was started subsequently in 1932. The land & buildings were said to have been sanctified by the presence of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Brahmanandaji Maharaj, Swami Saradananadaji Maharaj, Swami Vijnananandaji Maharaj and some other direct disciples and devotees of Sri Ramakrishna. Sri Mahendranath Gupta ("M") stayed here and is said to have worked on the Gospel of the Master (Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita) in one of the two rooms in the front. The small statues of elephants on the two pillars at the open verandah in front has earned it the nick name of "Hathi Kuthi".

This Math has been relentlessly rendering its humble service for the spiritual welfare and uplift of monks, saints, devotees from all over India & abroad. Apart from this, the Math is ever engaged for the betterment of the so-called economically backward people staying in areas nearby.

LAKSHMI NIKETAN
Lakshmimani Devi (Lakshmi Didi), neice of Sri Ramakrishna about whom the latter said "She is the manifestation of Goddess Sitala!" was moulded in the presence of Sri Ramakrishna and Holy Mother. She had helped Holy Mother serve Sri Ramakrishna during the last days at Shyampukur and Cossipore in Kolkata. She was initiated by Sri Ramakrishna in the vaishnava discipline. After Sri Ramakrishna's passing away she stayed with Holy Mother whenever possible besides her stay at Kamarpukur and journeys on pilgrimage to various places including Puri in 1888. She came to Puri via Bhubaneswar in 1922 when a plot of land was arranged for her by her local disciples and a house built where she began staying from around a couple of years later. She entered Mahasamadhi on February 24, 1926, leaving behind a number of disciples here.
